Over quite a number of years I have held a deep concern for children living in orphanages…feeling led by Mary to act upon this concern during the summer of 2001 following a meeting with a woman caring for children in the slums of Nairobi Kenya.
The organization of Held in a Mother’s Arms developed over time beginning with a lovely Sunday Universal Service held at the Sirius Community [in Shutesbury MA] by Deborah Wilson and myself in July 2001 where we requested guests bring art materials for the children living in Kenya.
Since the first 2 boxes of materials were sent to Kenya, we we have found ways of sending warm clothing, diapers, baby packs, handmade quilts, art materials, stuffed animals and books to an orphanage in Siberia, stuffed animals to orphanages in Romania and Brazil, children's shoes to an orphanage in Ukraine, art materials to an orphanage in Mexico, and baby clothes, dolls and art materials to a refugee shelter in South Africa.
In June 2003, in collaboration with the humanitarian relief organization WAR CHILD USA, we held our first benefit at the Unitarian Universalist meetinghouse in Amherst MA…raising $300 in support of the rebuilding of an orphanage in Nasirya Iraq following the bombing of Iraq in March 2003.
Held in a Mother's Arms is a not-for-profit organization based in the western part of Massachusetts. We are in the process of applying for our 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
